JFC to Take Up K12 This Afternoon

The Joint Finance Committee will meet this afternoon to take up education as lawmakers begin a final push to finish the long-delayed budget.
Multiple sources told WisPolitics.com late last week the education package was expected to include boosting the income limit for the statewide school choice program to 220 percent of the federal poverty limit.
Deciding on a new income eligibility limit for the statewide voucher program was one of the last significant differences between Assembly and Senate Republicans.
The Assembly GOP has indicated it supported an increase to 300 percent, which is $73,800 for a family of four. The Senate GOP’s budget proposal, meanwhile, pushed an increase to 220 percent, which is $53,826.
The current limit is 185 percent, which is $45,263.
Along with the voucher program and public instruction, the Joint Finance Committee is scheduled to take up the Building Commission, the building program, the school levy tax credit and the lottery.

Foxconn Could Put Strain on the State Budget in the Future

Electronics maker Foxconn could make a historic investment in Wisconsin’s economy, but the proposed incentive deal to lure the company could put a $1 billion strain on the state’s budget in the next decade, according to an analysis on which lawmakers rely to assess the proposal.
Health care and education advocates and some Democratic lawmakers say that’s a concern with the Foxconn deal, negotiated with the Taiwanese company by the administration of Gov. Scott Walker.

Nygren: School Officials Complaints of Late State Budget ‘Smoke and Mirrors’

One of the chief lawmakers writing the next state budget said Thursday that school officials and Democrats are exaggerating if they say schools are holding off on new spending because a new two-year state spending plan is not in place.
“I think that is all smoke and mirrors, quite honestly,” Joint Finance Committee co-chairman Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, said of such concerns.

JFC To Take Up K-12 Issues on Monday

The Joint Finance Committee will convene on Monday, August 28th at 1:30 p.m. and take up among other issues the K-12 public instruction portion of the state budget including the following areas:
- General School Aids and Revenue Limits
- Categorical Aids
- Choice, Charter, and Open Enrollment
- School District Operations
- Administrative and Other Funding
- School Levy Tax Credit
