JFC Co-Chairs Comment on Budget, Budget Repair

Senator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Representative Robin Vos (R-Rochester) commented on the State Budget, the Budget Repair Bill and other issues at a WisPolitics luncheon held yesterday at the Madison Club. The takeaways from the meeting include:
- Senator Darling said the Budget should clear the Joint Finance Committee by the end of May at the latest.
- Darling also said she’d like to have the budget on the Governor’s desk by mid-June.
- Representative Vos said the Budget Repair Bill the Governor is putting together should be limited to those fiscal items proposed in the first attempt — including refinancing the state debt, medical assistance, corrections and public defenders.

Walker Overestimated School Savings, Dem Lawmaker Says

In a news article posted yesterday, Amy Hetzner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal writes that, according to an analysis by Representative Sondy Pope-Roberts (D-Verona), Governor Scott Walker overestimated the number of school districts that will be able to cover reductions in per pupil revenue limits by reducing benefit costs in 2011-12. Pope-Roberts uses data from the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau in her analysis. Representative Pope-Roberts is the ranking Democrat on the Assembly Education Committee.

Dane County DA Ismael Ozanne has until 4 p.m. to address some of the arguments the Department of Justice made in appealing a court decision blocking the changes to collective bargaining powers for public employees.

The 4th District Court of Appeals set the deadline for Ozanne to respond specifically to DOJ’s argument that the judicial branch has no jurisdiction to enjoin the secretary of state from publishing an act.
The appeals court also gave Ozanne until 4 p.m. tomorrow to weigh in on anything else in the DOJ request to lift the temporary restraining order issued Friday that prevents the bill from being published.
