SAA Issues Veto Letter

By Wisconsin School Administrators Alliance staff | June 21, 2013

The SAA hand-delivered its letter outlining its budget priorities as the Governor considers his vetoes to the 2013-15 State Budget.  In the letter, the SAA outlined its priorities as follows:

“As the SAA examined the provisions of 2013 Assembly Bill 40 as passed by the Legislature, we found items to support as well as several items of major concern.  The SAA strongly supports retaining the $150 increase in per pupil resources for public schools in each year of the biennium, even though the fiscal challenges facing school districts and the state’s much improved revenue picture warrants a much higher per pupil increase for schools.  The SAA also supports the provision of $10 million in High Cost Transportation Aid, $13.583 million in support for the Educator Effectiveness Evaluation System and $12.066 million in support for Smarter Balanced and ACT Assessments over the biennium, as well as the modified general aid calculation for consolidated districts and the provision of National Forest Income payments to schools.

Our greatest concern is the expansion of private school vouchers in the budget.  We also are very concerned about the Income Tax Deduction for Private School Tuition, the restrictions imposed on rehiring Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) annuitants and the freezing of the Community Service (Fund 80) Levy.  We ask that you use your veto authority to reshape these provisions in support of Wisconsin schools and Wisconsin school children.”
