GOP Seeks to Shield Legislators from Open Records Law
By Wisconsin School Administrators Alliance staff | July 3, 2015
Check out this article from Patrick Marley of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on the changes to the Open Records Law adopted by GOP members of the Joint Finance Committee in last night’s wrap-up motion. Marley begins his article with the following:
“A dozen Republican lawmakers shot the state’s open records law full of holes late Thursday, but are declining to say who is the prime force behind shielding legislators and other government officials from having to show the public how they make decisions.
The changes are sweeping, essentially allowing public officials to keep secret records that reveal how they do their jobs.”
The Wisconsin Newspapers Association has issued an action alert in opposition to the proposals. Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel has also come out against the proposed changes.
Given that several education advocacy organizations have made open records requests of lawmakers to gain information about the development of GOP education policies in the past few months, this is an issue of interest to all of us.
