Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, and Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, will be back next session as the co-chairs of the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, announced Darling’s appointment last week. Nygren’s been all but assured of coming back to the spot. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, made it official today.
“I have every confidence in John’s ability to lead this important committee,” Vos said in a news release. “He has done an outstanding job ushering through three balanced state budgets, two as JFC co-chair. His record of success and steadfast commitment to taxpayers make him the obvious choice for this position.”
Fitzgerald decided to keep his same slate of Senate GOP members of the committee, but a Vos spokeswoman said yesterday that it’s too early to announce his remaining appointments.
Darling said last week Republicans have been focused on finding ways to “spend less, and use what we have instead of asking for more.”
“Last session, the budget contained no new sales or income taxes, simplified the tax code, and had the lowest bonding levels in 20 years,” Darling said. “Wisconsin’s pension is fully funded. And according to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, our state has the lowest property tax burden since 1946. That’s a record I’m proud of, and I’m looking forward to doing more.”
